The Taiko Clay Group has its roots in the plantation business from our founder, the late Tan Sri Dato' Seri Lee Loy Seng. With the formation of his plantation group in the 1970's, it became advantageous to grow into various supporting industries that would help in the downstream processing of plantation crops into finished goods.
One of the major plantation crop outputs at the time was rubber. Large quantities of concentrated sulphuric acid were required to produce skim crepe rubber. This led our founder to start his Sulphuric Acid manufacturing business.
By the 1980's, it became apparent that the Oil Palm was on its way to becoming one of the most important oilseed crops in the region. Conversely, the popularity of rubber plantations shrank as more planters turned to the increasingly profitable palm oil crop.
During this time, the Group started experimenting with a new product from Europe called Activated Clay. It required the use of inorganic acid to manufacture and was an important product for the edible oil refineries springing up to refine Palm Oil in Malaysia and Indonesia .
